The People’s Music $14.38 The People’s Music builds on the concept and musical themes presented in The Violin Factory. The Chinese violin factories from Mao Zedong’s era — and their later demise — become an allegory on control of the masses, music and art as propaganda, and the dichotomy of mass production and music-making. The Violin Factory involved a string orchestra, live sampling added to the performance in real time, internet contributions, narration, and live video art. For The People’s Music, Jon Rose chose simpler means. The performance is for the most part acoustic, the composer adding some live sampling (but nothing as drastic as Kaffe Matthews’ work on the previous album). Conducted by Lindsay Vickery, the string ensemble (members of The West Australian Youth Orchestra and The University of Western Australia String Orchestra) is accompanied by an “industrial percussion ensemble” of three musicians and Lely Evans portraying a “Screaming Red Guard Factory Guide” — her role, a Red Guard stereotype, is quite different from the guide integrated into the previous work. Sounds and video footage from the factories are still embedded here, and Rose often has the strings follow the see-sawing sounds made by the violin makers, or mimic Suzuki violin classes. The music ranges from delicate noise-making to glorious, overtly emotional string themes, gripping film-like passages, and moments that sound like orchestral arrangements of industrial rock. The 13 pieces all segue, forming a continuous 45-minute work that is akin in approach to Rose’s hörspiels (see The Fence, Brain Weather, and Violin Music in the Age of Shopping, among others). Less striking and perplexing than The Violin Factory, this album is also more listener-friendly. Acting Material for Dramatic Classes $34.48 ACTING MATERIAL FOR DRAMATIC CLASSES COMPILED BY ANGUS WILSON – 1934 – PREFACE ONE of the many difficulties met with in organizing the work of Dramatic Classes in Evening Institutes and similar places is the lack of material suitable for intensive practice in the technique of acting. The many excellent anthologies of plays are not compiled with this end in view-indeed, in some of them the average number of characters per play is so small that the majority of a class is left out. Watching others being taught is very useful, but it becomes wearisome if one has to wait two or three weeks for ones turn. In some classes, little or no tuition is given, all the work being directed towards a production for public performance. The actors buy a copy of the play and the matter ends there. But most teachers try to devote a part of each evening to instruction, and for this purpose they require a book containing a number of short scenes, each of which must be played in its own special style. I have endeavoured in this volume to satisfy the need. It ought to be found equally useful for helping to cure special faults. If, for example, a class is slow on its cues it can be turned on to The Lilies of the Field if it lacks attack, The Lady of Lyons or The Critic will give it verve if its timing is bad it can be made to practise pause and variety of tempo in Str fe or If Four Walls Told. The selections are short, so that lines can be rapidly learnt and something like a finished performance of the scene can be arrived at in an hour or two. Polish and assurance can thus be attained a dozen times in a winter, instead of, at the most, two or three times when only complete plays a. re used. Apart from TheSpell, few of the extracts have any entertainment value in themselves, so that complete plays will be required in addition if a public show is being aimed at. Though this is by no means an anthology of dramatic gems I have tried to draw on plays which are of some value from the point of view of either study or performance. Particulars of publisher, royalty, and cast are given opposite the first page of each extract. I have also tried to keep in mind that scenes must contain parts for the largest possible number of players, and that in most dramatic classes women greatly predominate. In many scenes male parts can easily be taken by women. To assist rapid casting, the dramatis personae are arranged approximately in the order of their importance in the scene, but, of course, this does not necessarily correspond with their importance in the complete play. Minor characters who can be omitted or doubled are given in brackets. I have added production notes at the end of the book, but they are intended merely as suggestions, and no one need have any compunction in disregarding them entirely. Discover Early Music $7.98 Discover Early Music is part of a series covering the history of Western classical music, from medieval times to the present day; each volume contains two CDs and a booklet of about 100 pages, mostly given over to a historical essay keyed to the selections included. One may wonder, when looking at these discs, why no one has done this before, especially in view of book publishers’ inability to come up with a good single-volume history with any kind of readability and flair. The reason is that it would be difficult for any label other than Naxos, the plucky Hong Kong-based outfit that has gleefully proved all the doubters wrong by expanding while everyone else was contracting, to pull it off; only Naxos has the vast and varied catalog to make a full-fledged survey of especially the early periods possible. One effect of this project’s origins on Naxos is that the medieval period is somewhat underrepresented; we get only eight pieces on the first CD to cover the entire period from Gregorian chant to the era of Dufay and Dunstable in the middle of the fifteenth century. In the early sections of the booklet essay by British editor and writer Lucien Jenkins, one can get through quite a few paragraphs without coming to any music. If there’s a hole in the Naxos catalog, it’s in the early medieval era, which is usually taken on by specialist ensembles that don’t line up with Naxos’ cost-cutting aesthetic. But that disadvantage is far outweighed by the generally solid execution of the whole project. One can quibble with Jenkins’ text at isolated moments, but overall it is a clear, well-informed introduction. If there’s one reason for the public’s comparative lack of interest in the music of the Middle Ages and Renaissance as compared with the art of the era, it is that appreciating the technique of a Josquin or a Machaut, as opposed to a Michelangelo or Giotto, depends on an awareness of technical processes that are not directly visible. In dealing with more complex forms, Jenkins excels. He lays out just enough information to make the general listener aware of the kinds of things that are happening without going into intimidating detail. The performances vary, but the Naxos predilection for recording regional ensembles actually works to the project’s advantage; nothing sounds strange when juxtaposed with its neighbor on the disc. This album should be ideally suited to the needs of adult-enrichment classes, tourists, and anyone else interested in an introduction to the music of the Middle Ages and Renaissance that can be covered in a few evenings. Rembrandt: Music of His Time $7.18 With its Art and Music series, Naxos has come up with a classy looking way of recycling earlier items from its catalog. The discs in the series don’t quite deliver what they promise, but this one does better than most. The title Rembrandt: Music of His Time is accurate as far as it goes; the art-historical essay on Rembrandt by Hugh Griffith is concise and informative; there are several nice color reproductions included in the booklet, beyond the norm for cost-conscious Naxos. The performances are a nice mix of above-average items from the label’s roster of Canadian, British, and Northern European artists, and an effort has been made toward remastering and coherent track sequencing. Is this music Rembrandt would have known? In most cases, no; most of it is not Dutch, and while some music certainly would have been imported to Rembrandt’s world, it’s not clear the way ballet music by Lully would have been. To focus on Rembrandt’s actual musical world would have required a closer focus on the music of the Netherlands during his lifetime, a focus that’s necessary to an effort to really understand how art and music interacted in a specific cultural setting. What makes this better than other similar releases, though, is that this is more than just a random cross-secttion of music from the period. Griffith points out points of conceptual connection if not actual connection: amateur music-making (represented by English works and by lute music), Lutheranism, organ music. There are pieces by Sweelinck and other Dutch composers. War of the Classes (Dodo Press) $13.98 Jack London (1876-1916), was an American author and a pioneer in the then-burgeoning world of commercial magazine fiction. He was one of the first Americans to make a lucrative career exclusively from writing. London was self-educated. He taught himself in the public library, mainly just by reading books. In 1898, he began struggling seriously to break into print, a struggle memorably described in his novel, Martin Eden (1909). Jack London was fortunate in the timing of his writing career. He started just as new printing technologies enabled lower-cost production of magazines. This resulted in a boom in popular magazines aimed at a wide public, and a strong market for short fiction. In 1900, he made $2,500 in writing, the equivalent of about $75,000 today. His career was well under way.
