Learn to Play the Electric Guitar
Many people do not know how easy it is to Learn To Play The Guitar. With online lessons so readily available you can even learn how to play the guitar for free. If you want to learn to play the guitar there are two things you must do first: decide what type of guitar you want to play and learn the various parts of your instrument. There are two main categories when it comes to Guitars, acoustic and electric, and each kind has its merits. Listen to a variety of guitar music and maybe pay a visit to the local music store to try out several models to help you make your decision. If, in the end, you decide to go with the electric guitar then the next thing you need to do is learn about your instrument.
The large bottom portion of your electric guitar is called the body and this is the part of the guitar which holds the bridge, anchors the strings, houses the pickups and volume controls, and it is also the place to which you attach your guitar strap. The bridge is the place to which the strings connect and the pickups are the electronic devices which pick up the magnetic fluctuations produced by the plucking and strumming of strings to amplify them. The volume controls on the guitar can be used to change how loud the sound you produce is and also to adjust the tone. The next main part of the electric guitar is the neck which houses the fretboard, frets, and it is the long, narrow part of the guitar over which the strings are stretched. Frets are small, metal strips placed at intervals along the fretboard and, when a string is pressed down at certain frets it changes the pitch of the resulting note.
At the opposite end of the body is the head of the electric guitar. The head, also called a headstock, holds the tuning pegs. The strings are strung through the tuning pegs, thus anchoring them, and when a tuning peg is turned to the left or right (tightened or loosened) the pitch of that string changes. Once you have gained an understanding of the parts of the electric guitar you will be ready to learn how to play the guitar. In the House $15.98 A double live album from a relatively unknown singer/songwriter playing her second date with her guitarist might not seem like a particularly promising proposition. Audrey Auld Mezera, however, demonstrates enough charm and talent to hold the listener’s attention through the course of these two discs. This set captures a small theater show in Sebastopol, CA, that Mezera played with acclaimed guitarist Nina Gerber (Kate Wolf, Nanci Griffith, Greg Brown). It was a local concert for both Gerber and Mezera (an Australian native who moved to northern California following her marriage) and the friendly surroundings show through the relaxed, warm performances. It’s one of those “you’re in the audience” live discs, complete with flubs and stage patter. Although Mezera reveals an appealing sense of humor on-stage (reminiscent at times of Tracey Ullman), sometimes you just want her talking a little less and getting on to the songs. This is a testament to the strong collection of material. Mezera, whose dusky country-folk sound recalls fellow Australian Kasey Chambers, exhibits a wry sense of self-deprecation on tunes like “I’d Leave Me Too,” “Shove It,” “Drinking Problem,” “Next Big Nothing,” and “Self-Help Helped Me.” She balances out these lighter moments with weightier tunes, ranging from songs of love (“Love You Like the Earth”) to ones about depression and suicide (“Black Cloud” and “Song for Clax”). Mezera’s plainspoken sentimental streak comes to the fore in “My Father,” “Hole in My Life,” and “Mountain Home.” The disc affords her ample opportunity to show her breadth as a songwriter. She supplements her own numbers with cover tunes drawn from likeminded musicians: Fred Eaglesmith (“Alcohol and Pills”), Mary Gauthier (“Karla Faye”), and Patty Griffin (“Mary”). One of the disc’s phenomenal aspects is how well Gerber accompanies Mezera; the two sound as if they have played hundreds of shows together, not a few. Gerber spends most of the show in the background, being the expert accompanist on acoustic and electric guitars. She displays some subtle yet tasty twang licks on tunes like “Shove It” and “Ball and Chain,” while “Jelly Roll” affords her a more jazzy workout. Gerber does get a couple instrumental showcases, most notably a tender rendition of John Lennon’s “Imagine.” This two-CD live set provides a wonderful souvenir for Audrey Auld Mezera fans who made, or missed, the show as well as a terrific introduction to newcomers not that familiar with this delightful, gifted singer/songwriter. ~ Michael Berick, Rovi |

Now You Are One Of Us $10.78 The Paper Chase’s signature sounds–strangled guitars, bombastic percussion, terror-stricken strings, bizarre samples and crashing pianos–are firmly in place on their latest endeavor, Now You Are One of Us. Here, the Dallas quartet creates the sonic equivalent to George A. Romero’s classic zombie films, in which one and all inevitably become one of them. Songwriter/singer/producer John Congleton examines the ways fear can be utilized as an instrument of control, even as it spreads like a plague across the land. Possessed by fear of pacification, domestication and ultimate dissolve, the songs’ characters struggle to retain their identity. Layers of trepidation are aurally peeled away and scrutinized while a looming unknown lies just below the surface. Beyond the fear of death, is the characters’ dreadful realization that perhaps they never even existed. The sound of ghostly forces opening and closing squeaky doors becomes eerily significant, and Congleton’s trademark desperation is at its most crucial as he exclaims, We will show this cruel word we were here. Despite the disturbed poltergeists that are its roommates, The Paper Chase sounds right at home in its self-wrought haunted house. Over the album’s seamless course, the band not only offers battle anthems for those who won’t go down without a fight, but also the sadistic theme songs of their bloodthirsty attackers. Another histrionic epic is rendered, but we wouldn’t expect anything less from Congleton and his crew. |
