Free Music $13.58 Free Music is Rune Kristoffersen’s second solo album under the project name Monolight. The once-Fra Lippo Lippi member and now owner of the Norwegian avant-garde label Rune Grammofon delivers a CD of sparse, spontaneous electronic compositions that stand much closer to the contemporary experimental techno school of David Kristian, CoH, labelmates Alog and Spunk, or the Bip-Hop label roster (Cray, si-cut.dB, Bovine Life) than the electro-pop sounds of his former band. Performed on digital and analog keyboards with effects, the ten tracks on Free Music were improvised following a hit-or-miss philosophy: hit, the track is saved for inclusion; miss, it is trashed. Kristoffersen allowed no possibility for overdubbing or salvaging in any form an unsatisfactory piece. The result is a highly cohesive album of well-defined pieces, but the sense of immediacy one would expect from such a work method is surprisingly absent. The sound palette remains very narrow and some pieces feel surprisingly dated (“Duo Abstractions 5,” for instance). But the CD also has its rewarding moments, like the introspective “Still Light,” quite powerful, and “Four Invisibles.” Whenever things get more melodic (“Stranded in Narrow Air”), they stay intelligent and uncompromising. Monolight’s music lacks some originality, but it is well done. ~ François Couture, Rovi Performers: Rune Kristoffersen – Electronics, Synthesizer |

Breathing Lessons $10.17 The Opus’ Mr. Echoes and the Isle of Weight are two of the most brilliant beatmakers working in hip-hop circa 2003. The duo, who has collaborated with artists including Aesop Rock, Murs, Meat Beat Manifesto, and Slug (of Atmosphere), uses its signature chopped drums on Breathing Lessons, but they layer it with strings, untuned piano, analog synths, and bass to create a haunting and disturbing vision. Hardly related to popular dance-based hip-hop (their sound is actually closer to dark drum & bass), their intricate drum programming still manages to be engaging (“Mission Control”), propulsive (“Earthwalker”), and old-school, despite its relentlessly forward-thinking, spacy groove. Maybe far less accessible then their productions for MCs on Rubberoom’s Architechnology and their own debut, First Contact, Breathing Lessons is still a moody and original hip-hop record that hints at the broad scope of the genre. These guys should be scoring Hollywood’s biggest and best sci-fi films. ~ Charles Spano, Rovi Performers: Big B – Turntables |

Language Lessons $7.18 2005′s Language Lessons EP is more sweet indie pop from indie pop icon Amelia Fletcher and her Tender Trap cohorts. It is their first release in almost four years, and not much has changed musically. The first three tracks are typically light and breezy guitar-bass-drums pop with Fletcher’s still perfect, cute but real vocals over the top with “Talking Backwards” the clear standout. The fourth song, “¿Como Tellamas?,” successfully brings in some cheesy synths, a new wave beat, and Lupe Nunez-Fernandez (of labelmates Pipas) on vocals. Amelia Fletcher has never made a record anything less than wonderful and this is no exception. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi |

Lessons in Living $10.38 Recorded in a live setting in 1982 — the same year as his Middle Class White Boy album — Lessons in Living is a mixed bag. The material is terrific, and Mose Allison is in typically fine form. The issue lies more with the “all-star” band assembled for the date: bassist Jack Bruce, drummer Billy Cobham, and soloists Eric Gale (guitarist) and Lou Donaldson ( alto saxophonist). For starters, Allison didn’t need a large band –or any band, really — to shine. Though he had been absent from the recording scene for six years until that point, he had continued to perform live and his chops as both a pianist and a singer are stellar. These players, fine as they are, don’t seem to understand the subtler kind of magic that Allison puts across in a club setting, and don’t know how to lay back enough — this is particularly the case with Cobham, who is overly busy throughout the date, double-timing already fast tunes like “Wild Man in the Street.” Bruce, playing electric bass, has a wonderful facility to move and shift gears with the pianist, but still feels a shade behind Cobham’s fast and furious beat — the overdriven “Your Mind Is on Vacation” is a case in point. That said, Allison feels like he is having the time of his life. Donaldson’s solo on “You Are My Sunshine” is stirring and raw, something that feels jarring at first with the wonderfully relaxed groove of Allison’s arrangement, but fits like a glove after a chorus. The stomping pace of Willie Dixon’s “Seventh Son” is a highlight on the set with Cobham lightening his touch a bit and Allison’s vocal is swaggering and tough. The laid-back blues of “Everybody Is Crying Mercy” is another gem, with the band holding Allison’s blues loose and easy. Lessons in Living is basically for Allison devotees, but it has fantastic moments. Ironically, Allison didn’t return to recording again for another three years in 1986 after this set was issued. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi Performers: Billy Cobham – Drums; Eric Gale – Guitar; Jack Bruce – Bass; Lou Donaldson – Sax (Alto); Mose Allison – Piano, Vocals |

Lessons of Life $14.38 Peace, love, and positive vibes couldn’t ask for a better campaigner than the man who delivers the conscious lyrics with the heart of a lovers rock singer, Luciano. With Lessons of Life he’s back in top form and you can thank Fat Eyes, the production team that blends roots and ragga with grooving style, for that. A hand-on team, Fat Eyes adds dub twists, sweeping synths, and ping-pong noises to a solid, non-digital base. It allows Luciano’s passions to run freely as he bounces between the roles of Romeo and prophet effortlessly and convincingly. That he delivers the roots-and-culture tracks with approachable warmth and a learned voice won’t be news to any Luciano regulars, but Lessons of Life is a standout due to the risks it takes and the genre wandering it does. “Sweetness” is a soulful, steamy surprise with more of an Al Green feel than usual, crazy bleeps and bloops make “Humble Yourself” a highlight, and “Love Is the Future” could pass for an R. Kelly/Lenny Kravitz team-up. Luciano eases into every twist and turn the album takes like a champion Formula 1 driver, and no song here is without purpose. Another killer album in a discography that has more than its fair share. ~ David Jeffries, Rovi Performers: Brian Gold – Vocals (Background); Chico Chin – Horn; Dean Fraser – Horn; Lukie D – Vocals (Background); Lynford “Fatta” Marshall – Vocals (Background); Mikey General – Vocals (Background); Nambo Robinson – Horn; Pam Hall – Vocals (Background); Peterman – Vocals (Background); |

Lessons in Love $11.14 The big lead single from Lloyd’s third album, “Girls All Around the World,” has a couple connections with “You,” the number one R&B single from 2007′s Street Love. Lil Wayne’s guest roles are the most obvious similarity between the two, while “Girls All Around the World” is built around the same drum break — the one from Chuck Brown & the Soul Searchers’ “Ashley’s Roachclip,” a source for the likes of Eric B. & Rakim’s “Paid in Full” and Milli Vanilli’s “Girl You Know It’s True,” to name two of the almost countless — used on P.M. Dawn’s “Set Adrift on Memory Bliss,” a song that, like “You,” quoted Spandau Ballet’s “True.” “Girls easily qualifies as this album’s most major drawing point, fit for summer with that familiar bounding beat and breezy synth-string accents, not to mention Wayne, who can’t help but humorously reference “Paid in Full.” And, of course, there is Lloyd, the should-be honorary DeBarge, with his loveable wannabe-thug falsetto. Incorporating some more club-oriented material wouldn’t have hurt the album, given how safe it tends to play it, filled out with gentle midtempo cuts and slow jams, much of which comes across as Street Love reheated. That becomes increasingly obvious as the tracks roll on, especially during the latter half, where two of the album’s more ridiculous tracks, “Party All Over Your Body” and “Touched by an Angel,” are paired together, their disparate titles and sonics belying thematic sameness (or mindlessness). And the heartfelt sentiment within the Outfield-referencing “Lose Your Love,” earlier in the set, seems more of a put-on than any of Lloyd’s tough-guy photo poses. “I’m Wit It,” a low-slung but urgent post-Neptunes strutter, is where Lloyd really excels, flashing some vocal gymnastics, swimming and diving through the beat while balancing desperation with swagger. Between that, “Girls,” and a couple other standouts, Lessons in Love cannot be dismissed, but Lloyd will have to really change it up with his fourth album to evade a real holding pattern. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi Performers: Doug Whatley – Horn; Jason Perry – Strings; Lloyd Jr. Polite – Vocals (Background); Allison Traylor – Guitar; Elvis Williams – Keyboards; James Devon Brabham – Keyboards; Jasper Cameron – Vocals (Background), Keyboards; John “JT” Tyler – Bass; |

Free $18.39 Other than a couple of obscure efforts for Buddah in 1970, this was percussionist Airto’s debut as a leader, and this is still his most famous record. A brass section arranged by Don Sebesky is heard on two tracks, and such all-stars as keyboardist Chick Corea, flutist Hubert Laws, the reeds of Joe Farrell, and even pianist Keith Jarrett and guitarist George Benson make worthwhile appearances. Flora Purim joins Airto in the one vocal piece (“Free”), and “Return to Forever” receives an early recording. The music combines together jazz, Brazilian music, and aspects of fusion and funk quite successfully. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi |

Lessons in Churchville $11.95 “>Remember when you built your first tree fort? Or broke your neighbor’s window playing ball? Or raided your best friend’s refrigerator? Relive the time of growing up as a late baby boomer in suburbia. Each story is accompanied by a “lesson learned”-what the author walked away with after getting into trouble or encountering new people who expanded his world view. See how these lessons shaped his morals and mindset amid the fast-changing times of the late 1960s and early 1970s. >Experience the actions and compassion of a dad who was ahead of his time in many respects and was involved with his sons’ activities-sports, music, and tinkering with cars and machines. Regularly attending their games, he snapped photos, jotted notes, stored the press clippings, and had his own “man cave,” complete with sports, Civil War, and personal memorabilia. His child-rearing strategy was unique. The writing is heartfelt and opinionated.” |

Girlschool originated out of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal scene in 1978 and are frequently associated with contemporaries Motorhead. They are the longest running all-female rock band, still active after more than 30 years. During their long career, Girlschool travelled all over the world, playing in many Rock and Metal festivals and co-headlining with or supporting some of the most important Hard Rock and Heavy Metal bands. They maintain a worldwide cult following and are considered an inspiration for many succeeding female rock musicians. Despite frequent changes of line-up, original members Kim McAuliffe, Enid Williams and Denise Dufort are still in the band to this day; the other original member, lead guitarist and singer Kelly Johnson, died of cancer in 2007. Lessons to Be Learned $14.39 U.K.-based Australian teenager Gabriella Cilmi released her debut album at the end of March 2008 to critical acclaim but not much public notice. However, as is often the case, word of mouth spread slowly and the album built into a Top Ten hit as more people discovered it. Having co-written all of the tracks with the production team of Xenomania (the team behind Girls Aloud and the Sugababes, with whom she had just finished touring) Gabriella Cilmi delivered a confident album with styles varying from Eurovision pop-disco (“Messy,” “Don’t Wanna Go to Bed Now,” and “Save the Lies”) to cool 1950s swing jazz (“Awkward Lies” and the first single to be taken from the album, “Sweet About Me”), 1960s girl group pop (“Got No Place to Go”), and a few ballads (“Einstein,” “Safer,” and “Sit in the Blues”). The album closed with the only cover version, a faithful reproduction of Martha & the Muffins’ “Echo Beach,” which appeared on the U.K. version only. A good debut album, but it had all been heard before, many times in a crowded market, with her voice sounding like a cross between Anastacia and Joss Stone (particularly on opening track “Save the Lies,” which also had a Kylie Minogue-style backing track). In particular, the recent albums by Duffy and Adele were brought to mind, with Cilmi sounding quite like Duffy on the song “Sanctuary” and therefore also evoking memories of Dusty Springfield — not a bad thing, once again, but Duffy did it a couple of months before. ~ Sharon Mawer, Rovi Performers: Mark Feltham – Harmonica; Bobby Bradley – Guitar; Brian Higgins – Xylophone, Vibraphone, Keyboards; Dan Tobin Smith – Guitar; George Astasio – Guitar; Jamie Morrison – Drums; Jason Pebworth – Keyboards; Jason Resch – Guitar; Kieran Jones – Bass; |

For Student Series Poetry: Music Lessons by Mary Oliver $8.99 Mary Oliver is usually and conveniently referred to as a New England nature or pastoral poet and thought to descend from a line of other New England pastoralist writers, from Thoreau to Robert Frost. “Music Lessons,” from Oliver’s third volume of poetry, Twelve Moons (1979), however, is somewhat uncharacteristic since its inspiration and situation begin in a house at a private music lesson where a teacher takes a break from teaching and plays for her probably younger student and for herself. Perhaps the poem documents a memory from Oliver’s childhood. In “Music Lessons” a teacher, perhaps growing tired with the student’s fumblings or imperfections, decides to take over the keyboard. The music acts upon the student as challenge and adventure and upon the pianist as escape from domesticity and mortality. Quietly feminist and more loudly a paean to music, the title, “Music Lessons,” is apropos in that the paean was, in its earliest known instance in The Iliad of Homer, a song praising and calling for Apollo, the Paian, or “healer.” Apollo is the ancient Greek god of arts and civilization, and specifically, patron of music (whose instrument is the lyre which is also the name of the frame holding the strings of the piano). Music, Apollonian or otherwise, may not serve as healer of life’s ills, but it does depict an act that seems to defy the duties of life and the inevitability of death-at least temporarily. |

To Be Free $39.98 There’s no question that Nina Simone is richly deserving of a three-CD (plus one DVD), 51-song box set such as To Be Free. From the late ’50s until her death, she was one of the great unclassifiable pop singers of the 20th century, and if her voluminous recording career was erratic, the first 15 years at any rate had many highlights. Any complaint about this particular package has more to do with the balance of eras represented than the quality of the contents, which is generally very good. If one is to criticize, however, it’s that it does seem heavily weighted toward her 1967-1973 recordings for RCA, which take up about two-thirds of the three audio discs. Perhaps that’s because it’s on the RCA/Legacy label, but certainly a good case could be made that her pre-1967 recordings for a variety of other companies (most often Philips) were worthy of greater representation. To focus on the positives, however, most of disc one does include strong pre-RCA tracks from the first decade of her recording career, including some of her best-known classics of the time, like “My Baby Just Cares for Me,” “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood,” “See-Line Woman,” “I Put a Spell on You,” and “Four Women.” While the RCA era arguably saw her move too much into pop-oriented production on occasion and too many covers of pop/rock hits, the selections from that era are chosen with intelligence, including a good number of live tracks. The two post-1973 cuts — one from 1978 and one from her final proper album, 1993′s A Single Woman — seem like afterthoughts to ensure that most of her career was covered in some way, but that’s justifiable considering that the last three decades of her life saw little in the way of noteworthy recordings.Though there’s not much in the way of rarities, the set also does contain half a dozen previously unreleased live tracks of merit; four songs from the hard-to-find album A Very Rare Evening, recorded live in Germany in April 1969; and a couple (a live cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Suzanne” and an alternate version of “Ain’t Got No — I Got Life”) that make their first U.S. appearance. The most tantalizing item for serious Simone fans is the DVD of a 1970 television special, though it turns out to be a little less exciting than one might have hoped. Lasting just 23 minutes, it intersperses scenes of her recording in the studio and performing on-stage (most of the songs being fragments, highlighted by a complete live version of “Go to Hell”) with interview snippets in which Simone offers basic comments on the rewards and difficulties of being a creative musician. Still, in all this is a very good box set illustrating Simone’s facility at jumping between and blending numerous genres, including soul, pop, rock, jazz, Broadway, classical, and even (on the previously unissued 1973 live performance “Nina”) world fusion music of sorts with backing by sitar and kalimba. Just don’t necessarily take it as a summation of all her greatest work, with much mo |

Sounds of Reform: Progressivism and Music in Chicago, 1873-1935 $8.38 Puts music at the center of Chicago’s progressive reform movement. Between 1873 and 1935, reformers in Chicago used the power of music to unify the diverse peoples of the metropolis. These musical progressives emphasized the capacity of music to transcend differences among various groups. Sounds of Reform looks at the history of efforts to propagate this vision and the resulting encounters between activists and ethnic, immigrant, and working-class residents. Musical progressives sponsored free concerts and music lessons at neighborhood parks and settlement houses, organized music festivals and neighborhood dances, and used the radio waves as part of an unprecedented effort to advance civic engagement. European classical music, ragtime, jazz, and popular American song all figured into the musical progressives’ mission. For residents with ideas about music as a tool of self-determination, musical progressivism could be problematic as well as empowering. The resulting struggles and negotiations between reformers and residents transformed the public culture of Chicago. Through his innovative examination of the role of music in the history of progressivism, Derek Vaillant offers a new perspective on the cultural politics of music and American society. |

Vedette $21.95 Born to a Gothic social order, branded a haunter of men’s dreams, Vedette is traumatized when her small town in the magical wetlands of southern Spain’s Guadalquivir River is overrun by hashish-smoking anarchists promising free love and a life without sadness to those who would follow them. Entranced by their flamenco music, their philosophy of revenge, and the concrete ability to deliver political results, the young woman joins a movement destined to annihilation and becomes its sole survivor, burdened with the task of keeping its memory and project for a better world alive through conversations with their flamenco shadows. Transcending political viewpoints, Mr. Siciliano opens a new chapter in the understanding of the Spanish Civil War, opting for a literary interpretation that looks beyond right and wrong to more universal lessons only the passage of decades and the healing effects of time can reveal. |
